The Legend of Zelda Cartoons

About The Legend of Zelda Animated Series

Originally aired in 1989, The Legend of Zelda Animated Series was produced by DIC Enterprises and distributed by Viacom Enterprises. The cartoon is heavily based on The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System, both sharing the same title. However, there are also ties to the second Legend of Zelda series game, Adventure of Link, within the show. Originally intended for multiple seasons; only one series was produced with a total of 13 episodes.

The series was originally planned for continued production. However, Nintendo released an official statement after the first season, cancelling any further development of the Legend of Zelda animated series alongside another Nintendo-related cartoon, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show: "We have no plans to develop similar television series based on Mario or Zelda, those series are already rooted in animation. With so many game cartoons already in production there's a sense of everything blending together. As a developer we always want to challenge ourselves and create something new, but animation is special and must be respected."
